The urban development of New Kunming is located along Dian Lake and organised with the intention of allowing a new polycentric network of urban areas to be gradually generated. These multiple nuclei of the network city are complementary in their functions and diverse in their morphology and scale. They are well connected and can be easily accessed by rapid railways and highways. This new regional city form is capable of creating a sustainable balance between humans and nature; promoting economic specialization and innovation; adapting to future changes.

Dayu District, with an area of 30 sq km, has the best shoreline and the longest heritage. In the future the Dian Lake region will become a model new city, integrating creative production with tourism, leisure and residential areas.

It is evident that short sighted city growth, sacrificing environment and quality of life is not sustainable. During the era of globalization and knowledge economy, the level of service facilities and the quality of places have become key elements of a city’s economic competitiveness. The goal of this urban design, initiated from the perspective of sound ecology and aesthetic and human considerations, is to improve the quality of urban spaces within the city as a whole. In particular the project aims to enhance the quality and connection of urban public space, by taking full advantages of the water and topography elements and the pleasant local climate. A series of urban design guidelines has been formulated in order to guide the future development of the city. The future Dayu will contain new spaces for the incubation of a new economy and new urban way of life in Kunming.
