The Huangpu River has played a very important role in Shanghai’s development. The local residents of the city are therefore very concerned about it. They gave their opinions on how to develop the river and discussed issues such as whether the skyline along the river should be preserved or whether a landmark should be added, such as the London Eye ferris wheel in London.

Dr. Shan also presented her ideas, taking the urban spaces beside the River Seine in Paris as an illustrative example. The area around the Seine contains not only a large number of historical buildings but also some modern ones. Classical and modern architecture is situated side by side in complete harmony. As Dr. Shan said in the meeting, “the Seine represents a cross-section of Paris, illustrating its urban development.” Respecting history doesn’t mean living in the past. What we do today creates the history of tomorrow. During this process of making history, we should consider the aesthetic quality of our urban environment much more deeply. We must integrate new buildings with old ones in order to protect historical space and maintain Shanghai’s modernity at the same time.
