On October 9th 2011 Dr. Shan was invited to discuss the development of the Shanghai Center. With a total height of 632m the Shanghai Center is a central landmark of Lujiazui district. This green building will complete the area, adding needed functions, enriching the city space and boosting technological innovation. The whole project is aiming for completion by December 2014 and the building’s core tube structure has already reached 22 floors, over 100m high. The main goal is to integrate offices, hotels, meeting spaces and view points of Shanghai into this ‘vertical city’ building. Dr. Shan and other committee members suggested that safety should be the most important consideration during construction, but we should also consider the humaneness of the design, the use of new technologies, the cultural image of the building and support facilities such as estate management and food services. The aim is for the Shanghai Center to become a landmark building that represents the future of Shanghai.
