Mar,18th,2008, UrbanDATA hosted the seminar on sustainable urban development with Nordic universities

 

Vigorously supported by the government of Luwan District, Luwan Overseas Friendship Association, Luwan District Planning Bureau and the other departments, chaired by Dr. Wenhui Shan, member of Luwan Overseas Friendship Association, research project on sustainable urban development was held by the Urban Research Center of Fudan University, the Nordic Centre of Fudan University, Swedish Royal Institute of Technology and Stockholm, the Royal Sweden University of the Arts cooperatively at Fudan University, from March 3rd to March 7th, 2008. This one week research project focused on in-depth and meticulous exploration and research on sustainable development of the southern Luwan urban areas.


This research project is one part of planning course on sustainable urban development, held once a year by China and Sweden. This research project aims to integrate specific cases of China and Sweden urban planning, explore subject of sustainable urban development, and provide academic research support for perfection of the urban morphology and the upgrading of the structure.


Courses of this year chose southern areas of Luwan District, Shanghai, an excellent site of city culture, which is also adjacent to the 2010 World Expo venue. Before the 2010 Shanghai World Expo, research on how to update this region through strategic level of urban development is the focused point by Luwan District government and civil society.


During the course, experts and scholars in the field of urban planning such as Dr. Wenhui Shan, Professor Karolina, Professor Göran Cars and Professor Bergman of the Swedish Royal Institute of Technology, Professor Henrietta of Stockholm, the Royal Sweden University of the Arts and Sweden famous architect Mr. Stellan and etc, were invited and discussed on the issues of sustainable development strategy together. Guided by experts and scholars, doctorates from China and Switzerland analysis the opportunities and challenges in the development of this region with the understanding of attributes and characteristics of space, economic, social of southern areas of Luwan District and proposed some planning concepts on further development of city based on the concept of sustainable development during the project presentation on March 7th.
