In a ChinaNews interview on November 21st, 2005, Dr. Shan was quoted, saying, “Currently, many Chinese cities have suffered a loss of identity in the rapid process of development. At the moment, urban design in China is not taken seriously enough.”

‘As China has had a long history and culture, most every Chinese city has historically had its own unique identity. Modern cities and architecture should continue this trend and develop with themes of preservation in mind. The method by which we preserve our cities but also lend identity to new communities is a great challenge and opportunity that we face today.’

‘The most pressing issue facing our cities today is how to develop sustainably,” Shan said.
