Beicheng New Area Urban Design

Linyi

2012

Water is one of the most important feature on Linyi's geography and history. The name in itself, Lin YI (临沂), means "in front of the Yi river". In our proposal for Beicheng, water and green are considered not only as ecological elements but also as valuable characteristics of the locality. The planning and design strategy is to develop an integrated urban and natural system as a new model for the 21st century sustainable Chinese city: the waterfront garden city.

By enhancing the area’s network of green and water, the distinct structure will be well connected with its urban and natural context. In particular, the Liuqin river will define a strong north-south green corridor and a newly designed creek will strengthen the east-west connection between the two main riverfronts. Along with the district centres and residential communities, these two “eco-corridors” will be the main structural elements of the plan.

The land use planning for Beicheng has six key elements: a commercial and financial centre; two specialised focal points serving regional businesses and tourists (the innovative centre and the riverfront recreation park); a sports centre that serves the whole city of Linyi; residential land use and; generous open space.
