Project Background

This project is an urban renewal initiative located at the former site of the Asiatic Petroleum Company warehouse at 3024 Yangshupu Road, Yangpu District, Shanghai. Situated in the middle-northern section of Yangpu Riverside, it lies at the intersection of Fuxing Island Canal and Dinghai Road Bridge, with Dinghai Road and Yangshupu Road serving as its primary interfaces. As one of the key components of the Yangpu Riverside development, this project serves as a vital node connecting the public spaces of the southern and middle-northern sections of the waterfront.

Low-Impact Development

Minimal Intervention and Localized Design

Preservation of valuable existing buildings, structures, and thriving vegetation, along with industrial components, is prioritized. A low-impact approach is adopted to establish uninterrupted pathways for waterfront strolls, cycling, and jogging.

Revitalizing Site Memory

Reinterpretation of Industrial Elements

The existing warehouse is repurposed into a cultural and creative building and an artistic flower garden, while the fueling canopy is transformed into an art and leisure corridor. Retaining walls are converted into artistic performance platforms, and ground paving incorporates pipeline-inspired designs.

The height of the boardwalk is carefully calibrated to provide visitors with optimal three-dimensional views of the canal landscape.

Functional Site Renewal

Integration of Urban Modern Functions

The industrial remnants are combined with technological landscapes to enhance the overall quality of the park’s open spaces, recreating the ambiance of the former oil tank facility and forging a more cohesive waterfront urban memory. The introduction of interactive sports facilities and recreational amenities caters to diverse urban demographics. By improving the adaptability of spaces across various scales, the project fosters a dynamic urban environment capable of evolving and growing.

The three major zones of the "Oil Cool" Art Park interconnect the entire public space, elevating the overall quality of the park’s open areas while reviving the atmosphere of the oil tank facility. It meets the leisure, recreational, and artistic needs of all age groups, creating a more comprehensive waterfront urban memory. Through the renewal of existing buildings and structures and the enhancement of site greenery, the park becomes a harmonious blend of industrial heritage culture and nature—a true oil tank art garden.
