Urban Design
This project implemented smart block facilities, including multi-functional integrated street lamps, a full-scenario perception system, and interactive digital signage.
Based on a comprehensive analysis of the area's history and unique characteristics, the UDteam adhered to the philosophy of "infusing life into the streets" to design, develop, and execute the smart transformation of this 160,000-square-meter historic Liyuan neighborhood. The installation and debugging were completed on schedule in May 2020.
Following site research, we proposed the concept of "Urban Ark—Unlocking Historical Narratives." Given the district's prime location and century-old legacy of industrial and commercial culture, we explored how smart block scenarios could restore its role as "a vessel of vibrant urban memories." Through studies of space, context, and human behavior, we categorized the block's spatial typologies into:
Smart features—including adaptive lighting and context-sensitive street furniture—were tailored to these four typologies, creating dynamic spaces that bridge history and innovation.
An integrated smart system enables real-time monitoring of block operations, tracking visitor flow and predicting crowd dynamics for proactive management. Interactive digital guides help visitors explore local businesses, while smart interfaces foster immediate, multi-dimensional connections among tourists, merchants, and management—boosting commercial efficiency and sustaining the district's vitality.
By consolidating intelligent, human-centered street infrastructure, the project crafts an immersive urban interface that enhances spatial experience. It pioneers smart technology applications in historic blocks, ensuring structural integrity while delivering groundbreaking spatial interactions.
