Landscape

Project Background

Located within the Yangpu Riverside public space system, this project extends westward from the Shipyard Section to connect with the historic Huangpu Wharf and Expo Water Gate cruise terminal. The design focuses on creating continuous pedestrian pathways and revitalizing the waterfront public realm.

Spanning approximately 400 meters, the intervention transforms the hardscape wharf area through the introduction of diverse native plant communities adapted to the microclimate of the waterfront. The design creates a "Herbal Garden" landscape that blends visual appeal with ecological benefits, adding a poetic layer to the post-industrial riverside leisure space.

Key planting strategies include:

  • Drought-resistant ornamental grasses (Miscanthus sinensis 'Gracillimus', Pennisetum alopecuroides, Cortaderia selloana, etc.) forming multi-layered plant communities
  • Soft transitional edges between hard wharf surfaces and walking paths
  • Dynamic floral compositions combining Nepeta, Agapanthus, Gaura lindheimeri and Festuca glauca
  • Naturalistic plant groupings that create an ecological oasis within the industrial waterfront context

  • The design achieves a harmonious balance between industrial heritage preservation and ecological enhancement, offering visitors both sensory richness and environmental education opportunities along the revitalized riverfront.
