On the morning of July 5, Shanghai Party Secretary Han Zheng visited the Yangpu Riverside section. Secretary Han warmly conversed with Dr. Shan of urbanDATA and provided guidance on the work.

The renewal and transformation of century-old industrial heritage sites, including the Shanghai Shipyard (Puxi), have connected the distinctive and captivating public spaces along Yangpu Riverside, now fully integrated.

The Shanghai Shipyard (Puxi) was one of modern China's most important industrial bases. As the origin of Shanghai's modern industrial civilization, it retains a wealth of unique industrial heritage, including what was once the largest dock in the Far East in the early 20th century, along with shipyard workshops. Until the 1990s, it represented the pinnacle of China's domestic shipbuilding industry.

UrbanDATA had the honor of undertaking the landscape, architecture, exhibition, and signage system design for the Shanghai Shipyard wharf area and Expo Water Gate zone. In reshaping the overall public space, we prioritized enhancing cultural significance. Under Dr. Shan's leadership, the urbanDATA team conducted thorough on-site research, engaged extensively with stakeholders and historical witnesses, meticulously studied site characteristics, and preserved and highlighted industrial heritage features. By applying contemporary spatial design methodologies, we integrated the project into the urban open-space network, creating a distinctive public waterfront at the shipyard section while honoring its legacy.
